Dr. Nicole Rietzschel, postdoctoral scholar in the Hamza laboratory, has been awarded the prestigious Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) postdoctoral fellowship for 2 years of funding.
The long-term objectives of the fellowship are to define the competing mechanisms for iron and heme uptake between the intracellular parasite Leishmania and its host cell, the macrophage. Dr. Rietzschel grew up in Germany and studied biology at the University of Bonn (2005-2010.) In 2014, she received her Ph.D. at the Institute of Cytobiology, Philipps-Universität Marburg, in Marburg Germany, working with Dr. Roland Lill. Dr. Rietzschel joined Dr. Hamza’s laboratory at the beginning of this year.
